  • 2 green onions sliced
For the Sauce
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon white pepper
For Serving
  • 1 large iceberg or butter lettuce
  • Fresh cilantro optional
  • Sesame seeds optional
  • Lime wedges

Method

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients
  1. Separate the lettuce leaves carefully, wash them thoroughly, and pat them dry. Finely dice the onion, carrot, mushrooms, and water chestnuts, then mince the garlic and grate the fresh ginger. Keeping all the vegetables finely chopped ensures the filling cooks quickly and fits neatly inside the lettuce cups.

Step 2: Cook the Meat
  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large wok or skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground meat and cook for about 5 to 6 minutes, breaking it into small crumbles with a wooden spoon until it’s browned and fully cooked. Drain any excess fat if necessary.

Step 4: Make the Sauce
  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, brown sugar, and white pepper until well combined. Pour the sauce into the skillet and stir thoroughly, allowing it to coat every piece of meat and vegetables. Cook for another 2 to 3 minutes until the sauce slightly thickens.

Step 6: Assemble and Serve
  1. Arrange the crisp lettuce leaves on a large serving platter and spoon a generous amount of the warm filling into each leaf. Garnish with fresh cilantro, sesame seeds, and a squeeze of fresh lime juice for added brightness. Serve immediately while the filling is warm and the lettuce remains crisp. Each lettuce cup offers the perfect balance of savory meat, crunchy vegetables, and refreshing lettuce.
