Ingredients

  • 4 cups day-old white bread or sourdough cubed
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan optional

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Mixing bowl
  • Small saucepan
  • Spatula

Method

Step 1: Prepare the Bread
  1. I always recommend using day-old bread because it crisps up beautifully. Cut the bread into bite-sized cubes and place them in a large mixing bowl.

Step 2: Melt the Butter Mixture
  1. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and dried parsley. Stir until everything is well combined.

Step 3: Coat the Bread
  1. Pour the warm butter mixture over the bread cubes. Toss gently until every piece is evenly coated. If you’re using Parmesan, sprinkle it in now.

Step 4: Bake Until Golden
  1. Spread the bread cubes in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake at 375°F for 10–12 minutes, stirring once halfway, until golden and crispy.

Step 5: Cool and Serve
  1. Remove from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. They’ll crisp up even more as they cool — trust me, this step matters.

Notes

I love sprinkling these croutons over a fresh garden salad, Caesar salad, or even tomato soup.
